bye bye blogger - hello wordpress

making some changes to the blog.. Inspired by mgb

  • Firstly, it's changing from blogger to wordpress. I've used wordpress on my other blog and I have to say it is so much better & professional than blogger.
  • Secondly, Meaningless Irrelevant Known Error is changing to "Ronan Skehill" - yah I know .. how original!
  • And finally, it's moving home - ssmh.info has hosted the site for 3 years. It's fine but the service drop outs are becoming more frequent. So to reflect the name change there is no prize in guessing it's new home is ronanskehill.com.
this ssmh.info will remain up for a while.. but all new content will be on ronanskehill.com
Thanks!

A bit of Chrome is nice

Google's Chrome browser was released yesterday and I have to say it's faster loading pages than safari/firefox/ie. There is a nifty page to see the stats on memory usage etc. With identical pages open - firefox had taken over 100mbs more than chrome. Chrome imported all my bookmarks etc. from firefox and seems to work well..  It also has an incognito window which says

"You've gone incognito. Pages you view in this window won't appear in your browser history or search history, and they won't leave other traces, like cookies, on your computer after you close the incognito window"

First impression: not a bad job google!

Empathy

Tried of using linux based instant messengers like pidgin etc. to give you gtalk 'chat' services but not voice services ? Will things are changing with the introduction of Empathy - you can chat away on google talk (including voice chats),msn, yahoo etc. all in the one IM program. I've also read there is talk of it replacing pidgin as the default IM in the forthcoming gnome release too.

How to install Empathy on ubuntu..

add
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/telepathy/ubuntu hardy main
to your /etc/apt/sources.list

then run an update:
sudo apt-get update

Then install using:
sudo apt-get install empathy telepathy-gabble telepathy-mission-control telepathy-stream-engine

Then run the empathy client from gnome-do or the start menu, add an account
make sure the server is talk.google.com and port 5223 and use old ssl is ticked.

enjoy!

Rose of Tralee

Well it's over for this year and that means the same old questions/headlines emerge : "Should the rose of tralee run next year? .. Isn't it a bit embarrassing in this day and age?"

IMHO it should keep running until we get roses when asked to locate Tralee on a map ramble on like:

I think this is hilarious... It kinda reminds me of my Irish leaving cert exam - the essay part - no matter what the starting sentence was - I worked in my memorized essay. aahh good times.

Speaking of leaving cert and all.. The First Years arrive monday... the majority of which were born in 90 / 91.

Crossroads

Usually (for me) Graduation time is a fantastic inspiring week and it brings a tremendous buzz about the place. The buzz is even better when members of the centre are graduating! So a big well done to Paidi and Adil who graduated yesterday. The only downside to graduation is it inevitably means people moving on. This graduation was a little bitter-sweet - I see it as bringing an era to a close. Along with Paidi and Adil, Joe has finished up, so has Francesc, mgb is MIA and Edu is heading away (after 7 years) to take up a post-doc position.. it will be really quite now with you guys gone. See you soon and in the meantime stay in touch..
